The Infection

The fungal eye infection Fusarium keratitis can result in significant scarring of the cornea and even blindness in severe cases. Symptoms of this infection include redness, pain, sensitivity to light, tearing, blurry vision, discharge, and swelling. Treatment for this infection may be required for months, using antifungal drugs such as amphotericin B, Azoles, fluorinated pyrimidines, natyamycin, and/or nystatin. If the drugs are ineffective and the eye becomes damaged, surgery may be required to remove lesions or ulcers on the eye.

Infection prevention

The FDA and CDC have issued guidelines intended to help contact lens wearers reduce the risk of developing fusarium keratitis infection.

  • Before handling contact lens, always wash hands with soap and water drying thoroughly afterwards (lint-free method preferred).
  • Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding lens wear and replacement.
  • Follow all instructions regarding cleaning and storage of your contact lenses.
  • Make sure your lens case remains clean and is replaced every three to six months.
  • Contact your health care provider at the first sign of infection or irritation.
